Nobody Ever Promised Me a Rose Garden

Nobody ever promised me a garden at all. Or even a rose. The only thing I know for sure is that I have the present moment. And that is enough. It is the gift of ultimate value.

I'm waxing philosophical after the tragedy at Northern Illinois University last week. Just another senseless rampage. Just another mass murder. Just another news story to tsk tsk over before going on to the next story. But this one was different for me. This was my alma mater. My home for 4.5 years. Where I "came of age". At that time, back in the stone age, the big issues on campus were the Vietnam War and students chaining themselves to trees to protest the building of a new parking lot. That's what youth is supposed to be about. Finding and defending one's moral compass and values.

We never know what is going to happen. That's why we need to be really here now. Present in every breath. There are no promises. The only thing we know for certain is that we are here now, we are and we breathe. Let's be thankful for that. No worrying about the future. No regrets about the past. None of that matters. That's just wasting time. This breath matters. The next breath will matter when it comes. Let's make the best of every moment. Because we have no promises of more. May something postive come of this sorrow.

May we all take a moment to be grateful for this moment. This breath.
